The Guthrie Theater and The Acting Company (TAC) reunite for a sixth year, presenting Hamlet, Shakespeare's story of a Danish prince's search for vengeance, justice and truth, in repertory with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, a reworking of the same tragedy from the point of view of two minor characters and their static existence in a world beyond their comprehension. This two-week engagement today, April 22 - May 4, on the McGuire Proscenium Stage, will conclude a successful seven-month 42-city tour, during which time these productions played to thousands of adults and students in large and small markets around the United States. Both Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead will showcase the talents of graduates of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program, as well as alumni of A Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training. (more...)

Identity and racial politics form the foundation of PASSING STRANGE, one of the seminal musicals of our time, and Mixed Blood Theatre's production honors that epic rock legacy, with the added dimension of the intimacy and immediacy of the Alan Page Auditorium. With disparate styles that range from '60's Europop to '70's punk to '80's electronica, to gospel, soul, and funk, to musical theatre, and with a nod to James Brown, this Tony Award winner is a play within a rock concert. Eschewing preconceptions, this band's lead singer is a middle class African American Buddhist rocker ex-pat story-teller, sharing the picaresque journey of his youth via 24 songs. The play's title is inspired by a passage in Shakespeare's OTHELLO. (more...)

Star City promises to be a fast paced, quick-change, four-door farce set in Soviet Mission Control filled with dozens of ridiculous characters including heroic cosmonauts, nerdy scientists, overworked engineers, menacing KGB agents, oblivious military brass, and antagonistic American capitalists... all played by only four actors. COLLIDE presents a modern-day version of Shakespeare's classic love story. Set in Brooklyn in the year 2000, the bare-knuckle world of New York City politics has created a blood feud between the Montague and Capulet families that has endured for generations, always simmering just below the surface and occasionally erupting into public view, sometimes with tragic consequences. The production features eleven professional dancers, two vocalists, original Shakespearean text and a four-string quartet playing popular music hits from artists such as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and U2. Children's Theatre Company and The Mother Baby Center to Launch Ticket Voucher Program for Newborns

Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota, and Children's Theatre Company (CTC) have launched a groundbreaking new venture as part of an existing partnership to bring theatre to young patients. In 2014, CTC will give every baby born at The Mother Baby Center at Abbott Northwestern and Children's - Minneapolis a ticket voucher to CTC. The program was developed with the knowledge that exposure to the arts, especially live theatre, directly impacts literacy skills and social development. This program aims to make theatre a regular and crucial part of Minnesota family traditions. (more...)

Park Square Theatre and Guthrie Swap Plays for 2014-15 Season

What's that saying about the 'best laid plans o' mice and men?' Last month Park Square Theatre announced its ambitious line-up of 19 projects for its first season with two stages, including the area premiere of Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, by Anne Washburn. The Saint Paul theatre had secured a contract for the rights to produce the play from Samuel French to open the inaugural season of Park Square's Andy Boss stage. Unfortunately, another agent at the publisher had already been in negotiations with the Guthrie, San Francisco's ACT and the playwright herself about a cross-country collaboration. (more...)

Park Square's 15th Anniversary Production of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK to Reach 201,000 Audience Members

This spring marks the 15th anniversary production of The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett at Park Square Theatre. When it closes on May 15, the production-the touching story of a brave young woman coming of age in hiding from the Nazis-will have played for 638 performances and inspired 201,000 audience members, including tens of thousands of students from all over Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. The original Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway production played for 717 performances. Julie Ann Nevill, who has played Mrs. Van Daan since the first curtain call, said 'This show has tremendous impact on our whole region with as many as 16,000 students seeing it every year - for most it's their first professional live theatre experience. Robert Dorfman Makes Children's Theatre Company Debut in BALLOONACY, Now thru 5/4

Children's Theatre Company welcomes Robert Dorfman, celebrated actor of stage, film and television, to the Cargill Stage in the world premiere of Balloonacy by award-winning playwright Barry Kornhauser. Dorfman, who recently relocated to the Twin Cities, will make his CTC debut as the Old Man in this world premiere production for two to five years-olds. Public performances of Balloonacy will run weekends today, March 29 through May 4 with three performances each Saturday and Sunday. (more...)

CTC Extends SHREK Through 6/15

Overwhelming early popularity and a Twin Cities All-Star cast has led to strong ticket sales for Shrek the Musical, prompting a one-week extension to the run. Shrek the Musical is based on the DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Peter Rothstein directs the production, which runs for all ages April 22 through June 15. (more...)
