Breakdown

JEAN VALJEAN
Male, ages from mid-30s to early-50s over the course of the play. A man of enormous physical, emotional, and moral strength. The hero of the story; mature, compassionate, and consistently in pursuit of freedom and Godliness. Released on parole after 19-years on the chain gang, he has a kind heart and a strong sense of moral and ethical duty. Tenor or high baritone (low A to high B-flat).

JAVERT
Male, Late 30s – early 50’s. Must be an excellent actor with great presence. A man of the law whose search for Valjean becomes his reason for living, and eventually obsession. Emotional scars have left him rigid and unbending. Baritone (low F to high F#).

FANTINE
Female, 30s. Attractive woman forced into prostitution out of the necessity to survive and provide for her young daughter, Cosette. Her life has held much pain and misery. She is ravaged by poverty, misfortune, and degradation. Mezzo-soprano with a High Belt (G-flat to E-flat).

EPONINE
Female, early to mid-20s. The Thenardier’s daughter; young and petite, yet streetwise and tough. Hopelessly in unrequited love with Marius. Sensitive, good-hearted, and often lonely. Alto with a high belt (F# - E).

MARIUS
Male, 20s. Attractive young romantic hero of the story. A man swept up in the politics of the revolutionary movement. Impulsive and passionate, yet capable of great courage and compassion. Tenor/Baritenor with a lyrical voice (low A to A-flat).
