On June 6th, 2014 Theatre Pro Rata will open Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, performing in Twin Cities metro area parks.

Twelfth Night is William Shakespeare's light-hearted comedy set in the land of Illyria. Disguises, mistaken identities, and the chaos of love take center stage as Viola washes ashore after her ship wrecks off the coast and, disguising herself as a boy for safety, is immediately embroiled in the amorous machinations of the Duke and Olivia. At the same time, Olivia's servants convince one of their own-Malvolio-that Olivia is in love with him. Viola's twin brother, Sebastian, adds to the mix and confusion until a happy resolution for most is attained.

The play takes on the feel of southern Europe in the 50s (think Roman Holiday) mixed with Pro Rata's signature eye-catching costuming by designer Mandi Johnson. Performing at several parks around the Twin Cities as well as Union Depot's gorgeous East Plaza, director Carin Bratlie said of the production, "12th Night is perfect for summer 'theater in the park' fare. It's bold and boisterous and tons of fun. It made perfect sense not only to pair it with performing outdoors, but to also dress it up in a 1950's theme... it's the icing on the cake."

In addition to the usual mix of Pro Rata's own actors, the cast features theater veterans like former Ivey Awards host Charles Numrich along with returning Pro Rata performers and local favorites Katherine Kupiecki and David Beukema.

Theatre Pro Rata's first foray into Shakespeare in the Park further expands its influence in the Twin Cities, not only moving into the suburbs for the first time but also to multiple locations throughout the run. Thanks to the sponsors from each venue, all performances of the play will be free and open to the public.
