Northrop Concerts and Lectures at the University of Minnesota presents the 58th Annual Summer Music Festival at Northrop 2012 (SMFN) on Northrop Plaza. A free, outdoor summer concert series, SMFN will "Rock the Mall" by featuring well-known local musicians and DJs, alongside emerging U of M student bands. Curated by a U of M Student Advisory Committee with Northrop Concerts and Lectures, the line-up presents an eclectic sampling of musical genres including hip-hop, dance music, singer-songwriter, folk, Latin, and spoken word.
Spanning across the months of the U of M summer session, the concerts of Summer Music Festival at Northrop (June 8 - August 1) have varying start times between noon and evening. Free food giveaways will be featured throughout the summer from various local vendors. The online schedule will have current information about updates and more information.
Student Advisory Committee member Rachel Hauser says, “The Summer Music Festival at Northrop brings the culture of the Minneapolis music scene to campus. Our goal is to get as many students as possible engaged and as amped up for the series as we are. We have such a great line-up this summer, and we'll also get to showcase a lot of U of M student bands.”
Northrop Concerts and Lectures Director Ben Johnson says of the festival, “This year's Summer Music Festival at Northrop represents the best thinking of some of the most musically-astute students at the University of Minnesota. Threads of rock, reggae, hip-hop, indie, and a special focus on Latin music makes this year’s line-up a not-to-miss festival. Free and open to all, this historic summer festival is one of the great cultural offerings of the University of Minnesota, and Northrop Concerts and Lectures is proud to facilitate this important "happening" on campus!”
