Guthrie's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT Enters Final Performances

The Guthrie Theater's production of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night moves into the final week of its acclaimed run, with the performance of Helen Carey as Mary Tyrone earning accolades for its complexity and sympathetic power. Carey, an actor with an illustrious career spanning a Tony Award nomination, pivotal roles in Guthrie Productions, stage credits in New York and the U.K., as well as numerous film and television credits, was termed "superb" in her latest role by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Carey was most recently seen on the Guthrie stage in The Winter's Tale and has appeared in more than 35 productions at the theater. Her Broadway credits include London Assurance (Tony nomination), Pygmalion and Hedda Gabler. Carey's international credits include All My Sons (Irish Times/ESB Award nom) at Dublin's Abbey Theatre and Arms and the Man at Ontario's Shakespeare Festival Theatre. Her film credits include Julie & Julia, The Next Three Days and Little Children. Carey has also appeared on the television shows "House," "Without a Trace" and "Seinfeld."

Asked recently to enumerate her favorite three roles at the Guthrie, she named a role in a production directed by current Guthrie Artistic Director Joe Dowling, as well as roles in shows directed by two previous artistic directors. The three roles were: Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard (directed by Dowling), Raina in Arms and the Man (directed by Michael Langham) and Sonia in Uncle Vanya (directed by Tyrone Guthrie).

Long Day's Journey into Night, which plays on the Guthrie's Wurtele Thrust Stage through February 23, also features Raye Birk (more than 100 professional Theater Productions, including more than two dozen at the Guthrie, nearly 150 television shows and more than 20 feature films) as James Tyrone.

Long Day's also includes John Catron as James "Jamie" Tyrone, Jr. (Guthrie: Hay Fever, A Christmas Carol, The Winter's Tale) and John Skelley as Edmund Tyrone (Guthrie: Tales from Hollywood, Hay Fever, Charley's Aunt). Rounding out the cast is Laoisa Sexton in her Guthrie debut in the role of Cathleen, the Tyrone family maid.

The GUTHRIE THEATER marks its 50th season in 2012-2013, culminating in its weekend celebration on June 22 and 23, 2013. The festivities will begin on Saturday, June 22, with the Golden Soiree and Fête 50 dinner parties in the Guthrie's Mississippi riverfront home, followed by BEHOLD, a star-studded gala performance showcasing artists from the Guthrie's past and future. On Sunday, June 23, the Guthrie will open its doors for its Free Community Celebration Day, featuring free activities, backstage tours, classes, shows and events.
