BWW Reviews: BYE BYE, LIVER Bids Adieu to the Twin Cities on Aug 4

BYE BYE LIVER is the interactive improv comedy/drinking game show that has been thrilling merry martini-sippers at the Camp Bar in St. Paul. The show offers lot of zest and a few chuckles and is playing through August 4^th.

The play centers on the follies of drinking. Audience members are led through the improvised scenes by a metrosexual-looking bartender and the piano accompanist who occasionally offers sardonic punch lines from his piano bench. The actors in the cast improvise scenes based on topics like “relationship talk after a shot of Jack Daniels” or “what girls talk about in the bathroom.”

Though these are fun scenes with the potential for lots of laughs the crowd has to be ready to chuckle along with the actors. If you’re there on a sparse night, the whole thing can feel a bit forced. This is especially true because the production also engages the audience in a drinking component. These are little breaks to have a brief “war of the sexes” trivia game or “would you rather” drink-off.

The show didn’t have quite as much drinking or quite as much comedy as I expected. I admire the concept and did get a few laughs out of it. You’re probably going to have the most fun attending with a group of friends. Couples and small groups may enjoy it but it’s designed for larger groups of people ready to chuckle over their gin and tonics.
